EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
