Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
