Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
