The star has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his new release People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the previous year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the shows I played around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his recent tour to help numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that funds from performances in big venues helps the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his award prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when they won the trophy in the mid-90s for their release their work, vocalist the singer declared that the group would donate their cash to the non-profit the charity.

During 2002, artist she divided her bounty across several charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," the artist told the media.

In recent years, the band donated their funds to the youth organization that supported their group, as well as other local music groups.

And 1994 winners they donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our success touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
