Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important representative said the incident made him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
