Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
